NCBA Bank partners with Baboon Project to plant 10,000 trees in Nakuru

In a collaborative effort to bolster environmental sustainability, NCBA Bank Kenya and the Baboon Project Kenya have joined forces for a significant tree-planting drive across Nakuru County.

This initiative aligns with NCBA's unwavering commitment to combating climate change, enhancing biodiversity, and restoring Kenya's natural landscapes.

The project resonates with the theme of this year's World Environment Day: "Focusing on Land Restoration, Desertification, and Drought Resilience."

The Baboon Project Kenya, established in 2021, is a conservation initiative that works closely with the Kenya Forest Service.

Their Green School Program, designed in accordance with the Climate Change Act of 2016, prioritizes environmental conservation within schools and surrounding communities.

The program emphasizes tree planting to cultivate environmental awareness among students and encourage a culture of tree stewardship.

NCBA Group Managing Director, Mr. John Gachora, expressed his enthusiasm for the collaboration, highlighting the role of young people in environmental protection.

"We are thrilled to collaborate with Baboon Project Kenya on this significant tree-planting initiative. I’m particularly inspired by the enthusiasm and participation of our young people," Gachora stated.

"Their commitment to growing and nurturing these trees reflects a profound sense of responsibility and demonstrates the role they can play in protecting our planet."

Gachora said they aim to make a tangible contribution to Kenya's natural heritage and sow the seeds of a sustainable and resilient future for generations to come through the planting of the 10,000 tree seedlings.

"We look forward to having this initiative across at least 50 schools in Nakuru County and thereafter to scale it up to other schools across the country," he added.

This tree planting campaign is one of 15 ambitious sustainability commitments pledged by NCBA under its "Change The Story" platform.

This platform fosters collaboration with strategic partners, including the government and private sector, to execute these critical initiatives.

"Tree planting is not just about adding greenery to our landscapes, it's about sowing the seeds of hope for future generations. Each tree we plant today stands as a testament to our commitment to environmental stewardship, a promise to nurture and protect our planet."

Through strategic partnerships and community engagement, NCBA has pledged to cultivate 10 million trees by 2030.

The bank additionally strives to foster a culture of environmental responsibility and conservation that will benefit future generations.

Other noteworthy partners participating in the tree planting activities include the Kenya Forest Service, Ushiriki Wema Foundation, WWF Kenya, Boreka Group, and Ahadi Kenya.

Stanley Kamau, Executive Director of Ahadi Kenya Trust, praised the grassroots efforts of the Baboon Project Kenya.

"I truly commend Baboon Project Kenya for their efforts in conservancy and community involvement in environment protection," Kamau said.

"This grassroots education is vital in creating a generation that values and actively participates in preserving our natural resources. Your commitment to this cause is truly inspiring and essential for fostering a sustainable future."

The collaborative spirit was further bolstered during the tree planting event when Gachora pledged Sh500,000 towards the renovation of classrooms and kitchen facilities at the participating school.

This contribution aligns with Kamau's plan to upgrade the facilities and enhance the learning experience for the students.
