National carrier Kenya Airways (KQ) has decided to temporarily suspend its flights from Nairobi to Dubai due to historic heavy rains and flooding in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

In an announcement on Wednesday, KQ announced that it decided to suspend one flight scheduled for Wednesday April 17, 2024 after canceling another on Tuesday, April 16.

The airline apologized to its passengers for the decision to cancel the flights owing to the severe weather conditions in the UAE stranding many travelers to and through Dubai.

"Due to severe weather and ongoing flooding in the United Arab Emirates, which has led to operational challenges, KQ canceled one flight into and out of Dubai yesterday, Tuesday, April 16,” said the airline in the statement.

KQ has indicated that it is closely monitoring the situation in Dubai and constantly communicating with Dubai officials to reduce the impact on the travel by its passengers.

Videos have been circulating on social media capturing severe flooding at the Dubai International Airport and other parts of the emirate disrupting flight and other operations across the country.

According to reports, the city-state receives a year's worth of rainfall in just a matter of hours causing massive flooding and disrupting almost all normal operations and causing massive panic countrywide.  

The Monday rains, which has never been witnessed in the UAE in more than 70 years, saw the vast airport suspend flight arrivals on Tuesday night as passengers waded flood waters.

The torrential rains reported across the UAE caused massive flight cancellations at the Dubai International Airport, shutting down of schools and resulted in a widespread traffic mess.
