Kenya is set to make a groundbreaking leap in the digital sphere with the construction of the world's first geothermal-powered data centre.

This ambitious project, spearheaded by a partnership between Kenyan data centre solutions leader EcoCloud and UAE's artificial intelligence powerhouse G42, was solidified today with the signing of a memorandum of understanding witnessed by President William Ruto.

The data centre envisioned as a massive 1GW facility, has the potential to propel Kenya's digital economy to new heights.

The CEO of EcoCloud, Amos Siwoi, articulated a bold vision for sustainable infrastructure as he expressed his enthusiasm for the groundbreaking partnership between Kenya and the United Arab Emirates.

"By harnessing geothermal energy, we are not only meeting the region’s data needs but also setting a new standard for eco-friendly infrastructure," Siwoi affirmed.

This collaboration transcends national borders, with UAE Ambassador to Kenya Salim Ibrahim Binahmed Mohamed Alnaqbi also present at the signing ceremony.

Peng Xiao, Group CEO of G42, echoed Siwoi's sentiments, emphasizing the project's significance.

"This geothermal-powered data centre is a milestone towards realising Kenya's potential as a global digital hub and fulfilling our mission of making intelligence accessible to everyone, everywhere," Xiao stated.

The project capitalizes on Kenya's rich geothermal resources, with plans for an initial 100MW facility that will be scaled up over time.

This not only positions Kenya as a leader in sustainable data storage but also reduces the country's reliance on fossil fuels, as highlighted by project details.

At full capacity, the data centre is expected to significantly cut carbon emissions and contribute towards environmental conservation efforts.

This groundbreaking partnership between Kenya and the UAE ushers in a new era for data storage, with Kenya poised to become a green data giant, leading the way for a more sustainable digital future.
