In a bid to revolutionize tea processing operations and enhance sustainability, the Kenya Tea Development Agency (KTDA) has unveiled a groundbreaking initiative – the Smart Energy Monitoring System.
This innovative program, currently in its pilot phase at Itumbe and Kiru tea factories under the KTDA Foundation, marks a significant step towards optimizing energy consumption and reducing carbon emissions across tea production.
Speaking during an assessment of the program at the Kiru tea factory, Sudi Matara, General Manager of KTDA Foundation, highlighted the initiative's objectives, stating, "We are here to launch the Smart Energy Management System program that will help us address energy-related costs. If we are able to manage our costs, then that is a gain to the farmer."
This initiative, a collaboration with the German Development Agency, GIZ, aims to leverage energy-efficient systems to lower operational costs and mitigate climate change impacts. Matara emphasized the organization's commitment to decarbonizing operations across the tea value chain.
