Kenya Airways has resumed three weekly non-stop flights to Mogadishu, Somalia in a move aimed at cutting travel time and improve accessibility between Nairobi and Somalia capital.

The flight from Nairobi will operate from Terminal 2 at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) after the flights to Mogadishu were suspended during the pandemic after resuming in December 2018.

Kenya and Somalia signed bilateral air services agreement in August 2023 in a move that paved the way for direct flights between the two capitals of the two East African countries.

Kenya Airways Group MD and CEO Allan Kilavuka says the resumption of flights to Mogadishu is part of KQ’s pledge to enable the long-term economic progress of Africa.

“The introduction of three weekly flights will undoubtedly enhance trade and economic opportunities between our connected regions, stimulate tourism, and strengthen cultural and social ties,” stated Kilavuka.

He added: “Apart from passenger services, our recently acquired B737-800 Freighter has started ferrying cargo directly between Sharjah and Mogadishu with a weekly flight and plans to increase this to twice weekly by April 2024.”

The flights between Nairobi and Mogadishu are set to boost the connectivity for business travelers, NGOs and the Somali diaspora as Somalia continues to realize relative peace.

This comes as Somalia was officially welcomed as the eighth member of the East African Community (EAC) in December 2023.

In January 2023, the Somali airspace regained its Class A classification after more than 30 years, a decision that was recognized by the International Air Transport Association (IATA).
