A shadow of disappointment hangs over the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) as staff grapple with the discrepancy between a gazetted bonus and empty pockets.
While the official record boasts Sh1.36 billion allocated for staff performance rewards, the reality has its version of the story - one of unfulfilled promises and whispers of diverted funds.
A gazette notice No. 15501 dated November 16, 2023, proudly announced the allocation, claiming it benefited 8,477 KRA staff and nine board members.
However, the news rang hollow as internal murmurs from those who expected at least a month's salary as a token of appreciation painted a different picture.

According to a section of staff members who spoke to Swala Nyeti on condition of anonymity, the amount did not reflect on their account balances.
The disappointment is compounded by the immense pressure they faced to meet targets and the memory of last year's bonus of a full month's salary awarded for exceeding revenue goals.
While the gazette notice credits them with the bonus allocation, the agency itself washes its hands, claiming the document originated from the Office of the President and therefore falls outside their purview.
This response leaves many feeling abandoned and frustrated, seeking answers and accountability.
The missing bonus, therefore, may just be a small highlight of larger issues within the KRA.
It represents a broken promise, a loss of trust, and a potential erosion of morale among the very staff tasked with generating revenue for the nation.
