Transport CS Kipchumba Murkomen has given the green light to the substancially increased toll rates for the Nairobi Expressway under the Public Roads Toll Act.

While these adjustments aim to support infrastructure development, they come at a challenging time for Kenyans already grappling with a high cost of living.

The revised toll rates, effective from the 31st of August 2023, affect various vehicle classes, with Class 3 (Saloon) vehicles facing higher charges for accessing the Nairobi Expressway.

As illustrated in the schedule accompanying the notice, toll rates have been raised at entry and exit points such as Mlolongo, Syokinuzu, SGR, JKIA, Eastern Bypass, Southern Bypass, Capital Centre, Haile Selassie, Museum Hill, The Mall, and Nairobi Westlands.

With rates varying across entry and exit points, the toll increases range from Sh170 to Sh500, placing an additional burden on the citizens.

This further exacerbates the challenges faced by Kenyans, who are already grappling with a tough economic climate, rising inflation, and increased prices of essential goods and services.

The decision to implement these increased toll rates raises concerns about the overall impact on the average citizen, especially those heavily dependent on private transportation.
