In a significant operation, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) seized 1,020kg of copper cables believed to be the property of the Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC).

The operation took place at a godown in Nairobi associated with a scrap metal dealer known as Shallian, located along Enterprise Road off Gilgil Road.

During the operation, one suspect, Francis Kaiga, was apprehended, and investigations are ongoing to identify any potential accomplices.

Acting on intelligence, detectives targeted the Shallian facility, uncovering a substantial hoard of copper cables suspected to have been unlawfully acquired.

The seized cables, weighing 1,020kg, are believed to be part of KPLC's network, raising concerns about potential threats to the electrical grid's integrity and public safety.

The arrest of  Kaiga marks a significant development in the investigation.

Kaiga is currently in custody, facing potential charges related to the theft, vandalism and possession of stolen property.

The Shallian godown, identified as a hub for illegal activities, is under increased scrutiny as authorities delve deeper into the illicit trade network.

This comes shortly after a strategic partnership between Kenya Power and DCI was struck to intensify efforts to tame the rampant cases of the nation’s electrical infrastructure.

This proactive partnership also aimed to safeguard electricity equipment, curb theft, and address the illegal encroachment of wayleaves.

As the investigation progresses, KPLC officials commend the swift action taken by law enforcement, emphasizing the importance of protecting critical infrastructure to ensure an uninterrupted and reliable power supply for all citizens.
