Equity Group MD & CEO Dr James Mwangi has challenged the private sector in Kenya to invest more in innovative technologies that foster sustainable development across Africa.

Dr James noted that the private sector, through industrialization, has played a key role in the deterioration of nature hence need to play a greater role in climate change mitigation.

He spoke when Equity Group hosted the Africa Climate Summit Private Sector Breakfast to facilitate key dialogues on climate challenges and sustainable development in the continent.

“Maybe we need to change the technologies, we need to be more innovative such that the innovations, the technologies, the business models sit well with nature, such that we reduce the adverse effects of economic activities top the health of nature,” said Dr Mwangi.

The event spearheaded by the Group stressed on the critical role the private sector plays in the realization of integrated strategies for climate mitigation, adaptation, and resilience.

The Equity Group boss said the private sector event matched the Africa Climate Summit’s theme of “Driving Green Growth & Climate Finance Solutions for Africa and The World.”


He asked private sector players to take advantage of opportunities created by the Africa Climate Summit to spearhead investments in green growth to mitigate climate change.

“There is $7 trillion that can be made by processing our natural green strategic minerals to contribute to the manufacturer of batteries, green hydrogen technologies,” the CEO said.

He added, “Can we provide leadership in these investments. But as we invest, let us invest in technologies that don’t contribute to pollution and global warming.”


During the event, private sector business leaders signed a declaration of their pledge to combat climate change while fostering collaborations between public and private sectors.

The significant meeting that was held in Nairobi on Tuesday came as President William Ruto rallied various world leaders to lead the push for sustainable solutions to climate change.
