More than 32 million M-Pesa customers in Kenya can now transfer cash to and from the more than 200 million people in Bangladesh and Pakistan in a new deal signed by Safaricom.

Safaricom on Tuesday unveiled a partnership with TerraPay (Mobex Kenya) making it possible for M-Pesa users in Kenyan to send and receive money from the two countries.

TerraPay Founder & CEO Ambar Sur said the collaboration with Safaricom will spur the growth of mobile financial service operators and enable them to scale globally and offer customers an opportunity to send payments in a secure, transparent and swift manner.

“Our partnership with Safaricom will further boost our capabilities in providing an inclusive global financial ecosystem with superlative technical solutions- cultivate an affinity by empowering Safaricom customers with fast and affordable borderless payment options and access to TerraPay’s widespread partner network of 4.5 billion bank accounts and 1.5 billion mobile wallets,” said Sur.

M-Pesa user will be able to send to and receive cash from Bangladesh and Pakistan through the M-Pesa Global service under the M-Pesa Super App or by dialing *334# and selecting M-Pesa Global under the “Send Money” option.

Safaricom CEO Peter Ndegwa the move will empower Safaricom customers to connect to opportunities with opportunities abroad given the critical role remittances play to Kenyans.

“We are therefore delighted to partner with TerraPay to enable anyone in the country to send and receive money to and from more than 200 million people across Bangladesh and Pakistan with M-Pesa,” Ndegwa stated.

He added, “This partnership opens up one of the world’s largest remittance markets making Kenyans more globally connected.”


TerraPay joins more than 35 partners under the M-Pesa Global service that allows Kenyan customers to send and receive money, and make payments across more than 170 countries.

In the last fiscal year ending March 2023, more than Safaricom’s 917,000 customers used M-Pesa Global and transacted more than Sh418 billion through 31.8 million transactions.

Safaricom also revealed that M-Pesa handled more than 90 per cent of all remittances into Kenya.
