The government on Thursday blew its own trumpet as it flaunted progress made in building the Sh60 billion Nairobi Expressway from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) to Westlands. 

In a post, President’s Delivery Unit shared a series of photos capturing the construction of the pillars that will hold the expressway at different sections of the Nairobi County.

“The Nairobi Expressway is on course to becoming a reality as key project milestones continue to be achieved,” PDU posted on Twitter.

According to the government, once completed, the Expressway will reduce commuting time between Westlands and JKIA from approximately two hours at peak time to about 15 minutes.

The 27.1km-long Nairobi Expressway, according to the government, is set to enhance Nairobi’s competitiveness as a regional hub by decongesting CBD and Northern transport corridor.

The costly expressway is expected to have 10 interchanges: Mlolongo, SGR, JKIA, Eastern and Western bypasses, Capital Center, Haile Selassie, Museum Hill, Westlands and James Gichuru road.

Transport CS James Macharia said the road has created more than 2,000 jobs for Kenyans and absorbed locally manufactured goods and services while encouraging transfer of valuable technical skills.

However, most city motorists and travellers using Kenya’s biggest airport are waiting to see how effective it will be in reducing snarl ups on the busy roads and how much it will cost them.
