Boda boda riders and online taxi drivers are set to access cheaper mobile services, fuel discounts, and safety support through two new packages unveiled by Safaricom on Tuesday.

The offers, named Ofa Ya Boda Boda and Bundle Ya Deree, aim to alleviate the financial burden of daily operations while equipping operators with tools to enhance their work.

The mobile plans include affordable data and voice bundles with free access to navigation and ride-hailing applications, ensuring that drivers and riders remain connected during their shifts.

In addition, they come with subsidised insurance policies to cushion operators against accidents, illness, and loss of income.

Training in financial literacy and road safety has also been built into the programme.

Safaricom said the initiative extends beyond connectivity.

Through Safire Connect forums, participants will learn about entrepreneurship and digital skills, including artificial intelligence, to strengthen financial resilience.

The company added that it will continue making 4G-enabled devices accessible to drivers and riders, bridging gaps in digital inclusion and enabling them to tap into online income opportunities.

Cab drivers enrolled in Bundle Ya Deree will soon enjoy discounts every Friday on Shell FuelSave Unleaded and V-Power at Shell stations nationwide.

Explaining the partnership, Vivo Energy Kenya Retail Manager Patrick Masinde said, “We understand the challenges faced by Kenyans in the transport sector, especially with the rising cost of operations. Through our partnership with Safaricom, we aim to ease this burden, with the fuel discounts to drivers being a significant boost for operators.”

Safaricom’s Chief Consumer Business Officer, Fawzia Ali-Kimanthi, explained how the new propositions extend beyond connectivity and reflect the company’s broader mission.

“Our purpose is to transform lives by empowering people to people, opportunity, and knowledge. With Ofa Ya Boda Boda and Bundle Ya Deree, we achieve the three in a single act, offer connectivity, safety, insurance, and financial empowerment to this vital sector,” Fawzia stated.

The Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS), in its 2025 Economic Survey released earlier this year, reported that transport contributed 4.4 per cent to the country’s GDP in the 2024 fiscal year.

KNBS data shows that more than 1.4 million motorcycles are registered in Kenya, providing over one million direct jobs. On average, riders earn between Sh500 and Sh1,500 daily, generating close to Sh1 billion every day in income, a sign of the sector’s significance to both livelihoods and the wider economy.

Safaricom noted that boda boda riders can subscribe to Ofa Ya Boda by dialling 5448#, while cab drivers can join Bundle Ya Deree through 5446#.

By combining affordable connectivity, financial support, and safety measures, the company aims to become a reliable partner to transport workers across the country.
