The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has introduced a new digital platform aimed at simplifying how landlords pay taxes on rental income, as part of efforts to boost compliance and reduce administrative strain in the property sector.
Known as the Electronic Rental Income Tax System (eRITS), the tool is designed to automate the entire process—from tax calculation to filing and payment—by linking directly with KRA’s existing infrastructure through the Gava Connect platform.
Landlords and agents can access the system via the eCitizen portal or through system-to-system integration using the Gava Connect API.
The platform was officially launched on Thursday in Nairobi during a government event attended by senior officials, including Treasury Principal Secretary Chris Kiptoo, who said the initiative reflects the state’s wider ambition to modernise tax compliance.
"The government is committed to ensuring that the tax system remains fair and that compliance is as seamless as possible. With eRITS, we are moving towards a smarter, more efficient tax system that benefits everyone," Kiptoo stated.

"With this system, we aim to not only increase revenue collection but also create a more equitable and predictable tax environment that benefits both taxpayers and the government."
KRA said the system was built to promote voluntary compliance by landlords, with a specific focus on easing the process of remitting Monthly Rental Income (MRI) tax.
It also serves to reduce manual interventions and the paperwork previously associated with rental income declarations.
