Bamburi Cement Plc, a subsidiary of Amsons Group, has unveiled a Sh100 million Ready-mix (RMX) concrete plant in Mombasa to cater to the region’s growing demand for high-quality concrete.
Located in the Bamburi area, the facility—operated through Bamburi Special Products (BSP)—boasts a production capacity of 120 cubic metres per hour and can deliver over 10,000 cubic metres.
It is equipped with transit mixers, fixed and mobile pumps, and a mobile lab to support efficient service delivery for infrastructure and housing projects.
Amsons Group Cement Cluster CEO Mokate George Ramafoko said the plant responds to increasing demand driven by key projects such as the Dongo Kundu Bypass, Makupa Bridge, Lamu Port, and housing developments.
"The Coastal region is home to accomplished and ongoing infrastructural projects – including the Mombasa-Malindi Highway, Dongo Kundu Bypass Highway, Makupa Causeway Bridge, Affordable Housing Projects, Lamu-Garissa Highway, Lamu Port, High-rise apartments as well as individual housing units – which are all creating a rising demand for quality concrete products," Ramafoko stated.

He noted the new plant would help eliminate the use of substandard mixes, adding, “The launch of this Ready-mix concrete plant strengthens our presence in the Coast region, enabling us to serve the region’s expanding construction needs with greater efficiency.”
The plant will also supply specialised chloride-resistant concrete for marine projects, addressing concerns over the corrosion risks posed by seawater.
Bamburi Cement’s Commercial Director, Martin Kariuki, explained the importance of using Duracem and Duraplus cements for enhanced resistance to seawater.
"Significantly large projects at the Coast have used concrete manufactured from Ordinary Portland cement (CEM I), which is not resistant to seawater chlorides that penetrate structures and cause corrosion to the steel reinforcement," Kariuki stated.
"This RMX concrete plant will use our purpose-made Duracem and Duraplus cement, which have enhanced chloride resistance and counter the harmful effects of chloride in concrete.”
This expansion marks Bamburi’s first Ready-mix plant outside Nairobi and is part of Amsons Group’s Sh51 billion investment strategy in Kenya, including the planned clinker plant in Kwale County.
The construction sector, a key driver of Kenya’s economy, is projected to grow at an average rate of over 5 per cent annually between 2025 and 2028.
