Safaricom is setting an expiry date for its customer loyalty programme - Bonga Points – that allows its subscribers to earn points for purchasing and using airtime on the network.

In an upgrade to the terms and conditions of its loyalty programme set to be unveiled later in November, Safaricom will expire Bonga Points older than three years on January 1, 2023

According to the country’s largest telecommunications company by subscriber base, the Bonga Points that have been accumulated since December 2019 will not be redeemable.

“This is a business decision aimed at encouraging Bonga redemption,” said Safaricom in a leakage of the updated terms and conditions.

The Bonga Points that will be accumulated by subscribers henceforth will have a validity period to encourage them to redeem the points.

Safaricom subscribers have been earning one Bonga Point per Sh10 spent on the network and they are allowed to redeem them for data bundles, minutes, SMS and even phones.

The Bonga Points redeeming programme was launched in October 2017 and the Terms and Conditions were later amended in December 2021.

Safaricom headed by CEO Peter Ndegwa hopes this will unlock Sh4.5 billion accumulated in Bonga Points by customers and reduce the liability from the popular loyalty programme.
