A woman has died after her vehicle plunged into the Indian Ocean at the Makupa Causeway in Mombasa County on Wednesday.

33-year-old Winnie Achieng was pronounced dead immediately she arrived at the Coast General Hospital where she was rushed for urgent treatment following the horrific incident.

Achieng, who was driving the ill-fated car, reportedly hit a pavement while trying to overtake a motorcycle as she headed towards Mombasa Island from Changamwe resulting in the plunge.

Her 12-year-old son, who was also in the ‘speeding’ Toyota Vitz registration plate KCY 556B, is reported to have managed to swim to safety as local divers rushed in and rescued her mother.

The boy sustained minor injuries, was treated and discharged and collected by his father while her mother died after taking in a lot of water while the car was inside the deep ocean waters.

Achieng’s body was later moved to the Coast General Hospital mortuary.
