Engineers Board of Kenya (EBK) has partnered with National Bank of Kenya (NBK) to launch a new-generation members’ ID card with payment capabilities. 

The pre-paid Visa card, issued jointly with NBK, was launched during the Engineers Board of Kenya’s ongoing annual forum in Mombasa.

The card can be pre-loaded and used to make payments online and offline anywhere in the world and is meant to enforce updated membership guidelines by identifying genuine engineers.

EBK chairman Erastus Mwongera said engineers now must present the new card to potential clients as the board seeks to weed out quacks.

“This card is meant to champion enforcement of the code of conduct and ethics for engineers in an effort to uphold dignity, integrity and honour of the profession. It has the added advantage of inbuilt payment capability,” Eng Mwongera said.

On his part, NBK MD Paul Russo said the partnership will grow the ecosystem by roping in merchants and service providers to offer discounts and offers to accredited engineers.

“In addition to demonstrating accreditation, it (smart card) will facilitate payments, as well as preferential offers and discounts suited to the engineers’ needs and lifestyle,” Russo said.

The new card will also be used for payment of subscriptions and other monies to EBK and can be topped up via M-Pesa, Airtel Money or any NBK branch countrywide.

EBK is the engineers’ professional regulatory body while NBK is a fully-fledged commercial bank and is a subsidiary of KCB Group.
