The Global Partnership for Ethiopia (GPE) on Monday appointed Anwar Soussa as the Managing Director (MD) of its operating company in Ethiopia, effective July 1.

According to a statement released on Monday, Soussa will report to the Board of the Ethiopia entity and Safaricom PLC CEO Peter Ndegwa.

The new boss of Safaricom’s new telcos partnership in Addis Ababa is currently the MD of Vodacom DRC and the Chairperson of Vodacash (M-PESA) a position he has held since 2017.

He cemented Vodacom DRC to become the largest Vodacom operation outside South Africa and enhanced its operational performance to cross $500M in service revenue for the first time in 2020.

Soussa is set to lead the Ethiopian Operating Company on behalf of GPE Consortium and execute its goals in Ethiopia which boasts of a population of more than 112 million people.

He is expected to formulate strategies to ensure delivery of quality and affordable mobile and internet connectivity to enable millions of Ethiopians access quality telecom services.

Before joining Vodacom, Soussa served as the CEO of Airtel in Uganda and Chad and also worked in various senior leadership capacities at MTN and Digicel, among other telcos.

The Greek holds a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from the American College of Greece (Deree) and a master’s degree in Marketing from Concordia University in Montreal, Canada.
